Florida Tech women’s golf goes out as D-II NCAA national champs

The Florida Tech women's golf program will not return after this season, one of three sports (along with the men's and women's tennis programs) cut by the school for budget reasons. The news motivated the team to advance all the way to the Division II national championship on Saturday, where, in the medal match play match against CSU San Marcos, they won the national title. Amazing.

This Mike Strantz design quickly became one of my all-time favorite courses in the world. Shot a career-low-tying round of 66, and it was the most special place I could imagine.

Where did the Bethpage Black sign come from?

You'll see the Bethpage Black course sign a zillion times this week, and you'll get sick of it. But I was really curious why the sign exists and when it was born. Josh Berhow looked for the answer for, and, well, it's a bit of a mystery.

Wet conditions means wider fairways at Bethpage

Winning at Bethpage is pretty simple: hit the fairways long and straight, stay out of the rough and hit a lot of greens. Good things will come. And with 24-28-yard-wide fairways, the PGA of America is laying down the gauntlet a bit it would seem.

However, with the wet conditions at Bethpage and not much help to dry out the turf this week, the fairways will be wider than they look with a lack of roll side-to-side and front-to-back. The fairways will be closer to 30-34 yards wide, giving the more errant long hitters some cushion.

Something to consider when picking your teams this week.
