The 2025 The Players Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Rory McIlroy, who earned the PGA Tour win in a playoff at TPC Sawgrass on the Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

McIlroy won his second Players title in a playoff against JJ Spaun. Spaun and McIlroy finished regulation tied on 12-under 276, though play was called on Sunday before a playoff could start. A four-hour weather delay in the afternoon made it impossible to complete both the final round and subsequent playoff.

Both players competed in the second-ever, three-hole aggregate-score playoff. Both players completed the par-5 16th, par-3 17th and par-4 18th to determine a winner.

On the first playoff hole, McIlroy made a two-putt birdie 4 after a 336-yard drive and a wedge into the 16th hole. He two-putted for birdie, while Spaun made par after finding the right rough off the tee and then hitting into the right-front greenside bunker in two and failing to get up-and-down.

On the 17th hole, McIlroy went first and hit the green with 9-iron into the wind, while Spaun found the water long of the putting surface without ever hitting grass. McIlroy made a 3-putt bogey, while Spaun made triple-bogey 6.

On the 18th hole, both players flared drives well right, and both chipped out to the fairway. Each player found the green in three shots, and McIlroy made bogey to win with a 1-over total of 13.

Tom Hoge, Akshay Bhatia and Lucas Glover all finished tied for third place, two shots out of the playoff.

McIlroy won the $4,500,000 winner's share of the $25,000,000 purse.

The Players Championship recap notes

McIlroy earned 80 Official World Golf Ranking points with the win in the 72-hole stroke-play championship, which helps his place in the world ranking.

McIlroy earned 750 FedEx Cup points as a PGA Tour member, with the PGA Tour points offered at the major level for this event.

A total of 72 (of 144) players finished the tournament, where a 36-hole cut was made in this event.

The 2025 PGA Tour schedule continues next week with the Valspar Championship in Florida.
