When will Rory McIlroy play golf again? The PGA Championship?

Rory McIlroy's ankle injury has him on the sidelines of the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews, but it's unclear how long beyond the year's third major that the world No. 1 (at least for now) will be unable to compete.

Golf Channel's Tim Rosaforte offered a potential timetable for McIlroy's return on Wednesday, suggesting the four-time major champion is likely to be out in the area of 6-8 weeks.

McIlroy suffered a total rupture of the ATFL ligament in his left ankle, amounting to a very nasty rolling over of the joint, while playing soccer with friends on July 4. He has said he will take a long-term view of the injury and not return until he is fully healthy and able to compete at the highest level.

That time table would mean McIlroy would miss his title defenses at the WGC-Cadillac Championship and PGA Championship.

However, McIlroy would likely be potentially be able to return in time for a portion of the FedEx Cup playoffs. McIlroy is currently fifth in the standings and wouldn't have a problem skipping at least two, if not the first three, playoff events if need be to get healthy. McIlroy finished third in last year's playoffs and 50th the year prior.
