For as great of a season as Rory McIlroy has enjoyed, he's had several critical -- borderline embarrassing -- errors with the putter in his hands.
On Sunday at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, McIlroy's approach shot at the Road Hole (No. 17) on the Old Course at St. Andrews landed short of the green. Rather than hit a risky chip to a tight hole location, McIlroy thought it would be wise to putt his ball onto the green from some 40 yards away. He was wrong. His ball didn't get all the way around and over the Road Hole bunker, falling back into the bunker.
From there, McIlroy made a critical bogey that was the difference between a playoff and losing by a shot to eventual winner Oliver Wilson, who picked up his first career European Tour win in 228 starts.
The putt conjures memories of McIlroy four-putting the 12th green at Cherry Hills C.C. in back-to-back rounds during last month's BMW Championship.
