Zach Johnson missed the American Presidents Cup team picture on Tuesday and for good reason: He has the flu.
Johnson was late in arriving to Dublin, Ohio, and host Muirfield Village Golf Club for practice rounds ahead of the Presidents Cup, which begins Thursday, according to Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman.
Todd Lewis spoke with friend and American teammate Matt Kuchar to better understand Johnson's illness. Kuchar described one of Johnson's symptoms as "explosive diarrhea."
Though Johnson is expected to return to the course on Wednesday, it's unclear if Zach Johnson will be able to play by Thursday, when the first of two days of six-match sessions commences. All 12 players on both teams must play in each of the first two days.
If Johnson is not well enough to play, then captain Fred Couples may well bring in Dustin Johnson to play, as Johnson finished 12th in points to make the Presidents Cup team. Webb Simpson, who finished 11th in points, is already on the team as one of Couples' two captain's picks. However, assistant captain Davis Love III played a practice round on Tuesday at Muirfield Village, fueling the idea that he would be the alternate.
Johnson made the team on points, securing his spot with a T-27 finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship, the final qualifying event. Johnson had skipped the previous tournament, The Barclays, to be the best man in his brother's wedding.
In two previous Presidents Cup appearances, Johnson has a 4-5-0 record.
