Monty on Sergio Garcia’s comments: ‘Mountain of a molehill’

Can the European Tour go a single day without a representative saying something offensive? It seems not.

Eight-time Euro Tour order of merit winner Colin Montgomerie extended the dubious streak to four days of head-shaking comments on Friday when he declared that Garcia has been flogged too much for his "fried chicken" remark made Tuesday night in response to a joking question about his recent spat with Tiger Woods at a European Tour function.

“It’s a mountain out of a molehill, to be honest. Totally!  I hope it hasn’t taken away from the BMW who have set up a fantastic tournament,” said Montgomerie, according to Golf By Tour Miss, after the second round of the BMW PGA Championship.

"Christ, we’re all frightened to say anything; we’re frightened to open our mouths in case we say something that isn’t kosher in 2013. Somebody should tell us what to say because no one is quite sure what is right and wrong."

Garcia wasn't the only one to offend, as the tour's chief executive George O'Grady then said Thursday that many of Garcia's friends are "colored athletes in the United States." O'Grady apologized in a statement for that remark.

“I felt sort for Garcia but then that’s me condoning it," Montgomerie said. "I am not allowed to feel sorry for him."

Despite Monty's facetious comments, he did made one salient point.

“The three ‘no-no’s’ are race, religion and politics and you are going to upset someone along the line if you mention any of them," he said.
