Lee Trevino regrets cameo in “Happy Gilmore”

Despite Adam Sandler's otherwise rather dubious filmography, his "Happy Gilmore" stands out as a film loved by golf fans.

The comedy chronicles the rivalry between the upstart title character and touring lord Shooter McGavin. McGavin is offended and frustrated by Gilmore's popularity and attitude toward the traditions of the game.

Six-time major champion Lee Trevino made a cameo in the 1996 movie, playing himself as he confronts McGavin.

Gilmore: "That's right, I'm gonna beat your ass on the course!"
McGavin: "Yeah, right. And Grizzly Adams had a beard."
Trevino: "Grizzly Adams did have a beard."

Trevino's other time on camera is mostly spent shaking his head at McGavin.

The Texas native said in a speech on Monday, however, that he regrets appearing in the film. Speaking at a University of Texas function, he told CBS affiliate KYTX, "If they were going to use all those foul words in there, I never would have done it."

In fairness, Gilmore's most profanity-laced tirade was bleeped out.
