R&A reacts to admission of women to Augusta National

As Augusta National announced its decision to admit the first pair of female members in its 80-year history, the Royal and Ancient looked, one of the game's two governing bodies, looked on with intrigue.

"We read the announcement from Augusta National with great interest and we congratulate Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore on their membership," said a spokesman for The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in an email on Monday night.

The R&A does not have female members. That policy, however, will not change because of Augusta National's decision.

"The rules of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews specify a male membership," the spokesman added, "and this policy remains a matter for our members to determine."
