2019 WGC-HSBC Champions final results: Prize money payout and leaderboard

The 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions final leaderboard is headed by winner Rory McIlroy, who won for the fourth time in 15 worldwide starts with a playoff victory over defending champion Xander Schauffele at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China.

McIlroy and Schauffele finished regulation in the 78-player event at 19-under 269, turning one of the most difficult courses on the PGA Tour last season into one of the easiest. Louis Oosthuizen was part of the equation, too, sharing a portion of the lead well into the final round. Ultimately, however, the 2010 British Open champion finished two shots out of the two-man playoff.

The two playoff contestants only played one hole, with McIlroy making birdie 4 on the par-5 18th to beat Schauffele's par. With the win, McIlroy has now won The Players, the RBC Canadian Open, the Tour Championship and the WGC-HSBC Champions this year.

McIlroy won the $1,745,000 winner's share of the $10,250,000 purse.

WGC-HSBC Champions recap notes

Phil Mickelson finished in a tie for 28th place, not earning enough points to remain in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking, ending a 26-year reign inside the top 50. Mickelson has been in the top 50, through various formula readjustments, longer than three players in the top 50 have been alive.

This was the final shot for American and International players to impress captains Tiger Woods and Ernie Els to merit a captain's pick for the Presidents Cup team in December in Australia at Royal Melbourne. Patrick Reed was among those to potentially impress with a T-8 finish. Sungjae Im finished T-11 to likely land a pick from Ernie Els for the International team.

Ian Poulter withdrew after the second round, meaning he does not earn official money for the week.

This was the final event for the European Tour's Race to Dubai before the final three-event series of the season. The top 70 players in the points standings after this week earn a berth into the first stage, the Turkish Airlines Open.

The PGA Tour's Asian Swing is over the for 2019-2020 season, with three high-caliber winners: Justin Thomas at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges, Tiger Woods in the inaugural Zozo Championship and Rory McIlroy in the WGC-HSBC Champions. Two events remain on the 2019 portion of the schedule after an off week next week: the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico and The RSM Classic at Sea Island Golf Club on St. Simons Island in Georgia.
