The 2017 U.S. Open purse is $12 million, with the winner's share coming in at $2,160,000 -- the standard 18 percent payout according to the PGA Tour's prize money distribution chart and the largest first-place prize in professional golf. The U.S. Open has the largest purse in golf by $1 million over the Masters. This is the first time in the history of American professional golf that the winner's share is more than $2 million.
The payout is based on the number of players who made the cut, with 68 players making the cut, including two amateurs, who will earn no money for their week.
The U.S. Open field is headed by Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, with all of the world top three missing the cut for the first time since the Official World Golf Ranking debuted in 1986.
The event is played this year at Erin Hills Golf Course in Hartford, Wis., marking the first time the golf club has hosted the U.S. Open, though it is the third USGA championship there (2008 Women's Amateur Public Links, 2011 U.S. Amateur).
