Stephan Jaeger shot the first 58 in the history of the Web.com Tour on Thursday, shooting the 12-under score in the first round of the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, Calif.

Starting his round on No. 10, the German-born, 27-year-old Jaeger got off to a great start on the club's back nine, going out in 6-under 29 on the back with a stretch of five consecutive birdies from 13-17. After making the turn toward the front nine, Jaeger made five birdies in the first six holes on the side.

With three holes to go, Jaeger, who went to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, needed to par into the house for a sub-60 round. He made pars on 16 and 17, both par 4s, before coming to the par-5 finishing hole needing just par for 59.

Instead, he did one better, making birdie and securing the first 58 in Web.com Tour history.

For the round, Jaeger averaged 341 yards off the tee, hitting 92 percent of the fairways and 82.35 percent of the greens.

Jaeger comes into the week 102nd on the Web.com Tour money list, without a top 10 in 10 starts this season. However, Jaeger had gone low previously, shooting 62 in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, that helped him move up in the tour's money-based priority reshuffle.

Prior to Thursday, the lowest round in Web.com Tour history was 59, shot five different times:

  • Doug Dunakey, 1998 Miami Valley Open, Round 2, -11
  • Notah Begay III, 1998 Dominion Open, Round 2, -13
  • Jason Gore, 2005 Cox Classic, Round 2, -12
  • Will Wilcox, 2013 Utah Championship, Round 4, -12
  • Russell Knox, 2013 Albertsons Boise Open, Round 2, -12

There have been rounds of 58 on tours that offer Official World Golf Ranking points, with Jason Bohn shooting 58 in the final round of the 2001 Bayer Championship and Ryo Ishikawa shooting 58 in the final round of the Japan Golf Tour's The Crowns.
