Every golfer should have some staples in their closet -- golf clothing that they can wear with any other piece in practically any situation. Callaway Apparel is perhaps the best brand that offers the right mix of solid value, versatile looks and high-quality materials and applications.
The brand recently sent me a box with some of their spring line, including a pair of polos, a pair of shorts and pants, as well as a lightweight jacket.
Let's start with the polos -- one in a navy blue and the other in a black base with a subtle pattern. These are great shirts because they don't feel flimsy or like something made to be fast fashion that's thrown away in a season or two. The shirts hold up in pratically every condition, with enough weight to keep you warm but great breathability to work in warmer weather while being able to absorb some sweat and still look good.
The Ergo golf shorts come with a little longer inseam than I would like (9 inches), but they're tremendously comfortable. They have a hidden zipper pocket and deep front pockets. This is going to sound bizarre and esoteric, but the liners in those pockets are the most comfortable I've ever felt -- to the point that it's an oddly enjoyable experience to put your hands in them. They're made of 88 percent polyester and 12 percent Elastane for plenty of movement and stretch, and the plain weave fabrication weaves in criss-cross patterning for extra durability. They're meant to look good and work well for golf or any other function. Available in sizes from 30-44", the shorts are great for all kinds of golfers. They also have big-and-tall sizing options, which is great, too.
The Sorona Stretch five-pocket pants are a delight. Available in five colors, they're made from 78 percent polyester and 22 percent Elasterell P with Sorona. These pants move, and they're a great weight -- just enough to know they're there but not so heavy that they feel like a pant for winter. These pants are available in nine styles, keeping consistent with Callaway Apparel making pieces you can buy in bulk and wear in multiple shades. The jean-style look works for a modern player, and they transition really well from on the course to the next place you're going.
Finally, the heathered block full-zip jacket is a piece you should consider for the fall and early spring months. It's a great two-tone jacket that gives the look of geometric shapes woven into the fabric. Made from 91 percent polyester and 9 percent Elastane, it fits to move but also with plenty of room for the shirt you're no doubt wearing underneath it. The arms run a little long, but that's being mindful of your golf swing. The jacket is meant to be worn on a cooler day or when a little bit of weather is rolling through your round. At $110, it also looks pretty stylish at a casual function to replace a quarter-zip.
Callaway Apparel really does tend to knock it out of the park on staples, getting the important things -- big and small, seen and unseen -- right to give the golfer tremendous value and clothing they know they can wear for years to come.
