Hong Kong Open to be played in January 2020 after postponement

After being postponed in November, the Hong Kong Open will be played in January 2020, played as an event sanctioned by the Asian Tour.

The tournament will be played Jan. 9-12 at Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, the typical host for the event, with a 120-player field competing for a $1 million purse. The event will serve as the curtain-opener of the Asian Tour season.

The Asian Tour and the Hong Kong Golf Association plan to announce player commitments in the coming weeks.

“We are pleased to announce the 61st Hong Kong Open will now be the curtain raiser for our 2020 season," said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Asian Tour. "As our season opening event, there will be an undoubtedly strong Asian Tour field with players eager to get their seasons off to a fast start."

The European Tour, which has long co-sanctioned this event with the Asian Tour, will not sanction this edition of the tournament. However, in future years, the European Tour expects to continue to co-sanction the tournament.

“While we are unable to sanction this edition of the Hong Kong Open due to other tournament commitments, we are delighted to retain an integral role in staging one of Hong Kong’s best-loved sporting events and we very much look forward to returning next November when the 62nd Hong Kong Open will kick off our 2021 European Tour season," said Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour.

The Hong Kong Open was set to be played Nov. 28 - Dec. 1, part of a doubleheader of events that were to kick off the 2020 European Tour schedule. However, the event was postponed when officials from the European Tour and Asian Tour decided the violent Chinese response to student-led protests in Hong Kong proved a danger to the safety and security of the players planning to compete.
