After a few weeks of teasing them out with seeding on major tours, Titleist has unveiled its new U-Series utility irons just in time for this week's Open at Royal Portrush.
The U-Series has two models, the U-500 and U-510, offering different options for golfers looking to replace long irons in their bag -- but not replace them with hybrids or fairway woods. These utility irons are designed to go longer than a standard iron, but they're also designed to produce less spin that can help a ball scoot along a fairway or up toward a par-5 green.
The U-500 model is more compact than its cousin, coming in with slightly lower lofts in each of the available heads.
The U-510 utility has a more forgiving, bigger shape. The wider sole and the more low-and-back center of gravity is designed to help players get the ball in the air more quickly and carry farther. In fact, there's a 1-iron model at 16 degrees.
Both models have the L-shaped SUP-10 face insert that folds under into the sole for maximum ball speeds. The U-500 sports 98 grams of high-density tungsten, while the U-510 actually has only 95 grams of tungsten. In the more compact U-500, the extra tungsten drives down CG and increases forgiveness while maintaining a smaller shape and less offset. The U-510's bigger shape and profile means less of a need for the tungsten.
The Titleist U-Series utility irons are available in pro shops on Aug. 30, sold in three lofts (17, 20 and 23 degrees) in the U-500 and in four lofts (16, 18, 20 and 22 degrees) in the U-510 for $250 each with a stock HZRDUS Smoke Black 90 graphite shaft.
