The Old Course at St. Andrews will host the 2021 British Open Championship, which will mark the 150th playing of golf's oldest major championship.
The announcement of one of golf's worst-kept secrets was made by the R&A on Feb. 12. While it didn't surprise anyone that the Scottish Home of Golf will once again host the Open Championship, putting the Old Course on the calendar in ink instead of graphite is always a meaningful occasion. After all, it'll be the 30th time the Old Course has hosted the Open.
St. Andrews has been on a track to host the Open every five years in recent memory, but an exception was made here to go to a sixth year because of the momentous occasion of the 150th British Open.
“The Open holds a very special place in the hearts of golf and sports fans around the world," said R&A chief Martin Slumbers in announcing the 2021 host. "The championship enjoys a historic and celebrated relationship with the Old Course in St. Andrews and we are excited to be marking the occasion of the 150th championship at the home of golf in 2021."
In 2018, Carnoustie in Scotland hosts the year's third major as Jordan Spieth defends the title he won at Royal Birkdale last July. In 2019, the Open becomes the fourth and final major of the year as the PGA Championship moves from August to May, with Nothern Ireland's Royal Portrush hosting, marking the first time a club outside of England or Scotland hosted the championship since 1951.
