TaylorMade P790 driving iron ready at 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

TaylorMade Golf has unleashed a new driving iron to its tour staff at the 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, and it appears to be a worthy replacement for the beloved Ultimate Driving Iron (UDI). The TaylorMade P790 -- in keeping with the nomenclature for its players' irons -- is a new prototype driving iron made available to a number of the company's players in the field at Firestone Country Club, including Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Jason Day and Rory McIlroy.

According to PGATour.com, players were testing 2- and 3-iron versions of the club, which is stamped with UDI and has Tungsten stamped on it as well. The P790 is more compact in the sole and topline compared to the UDI. There's also a weight screw in the toe area of the head. That weight port is likely used to increase the forgiveness of the club while maintaining a profile more appealing to a better player looking for a long-iron replacement that's not a hybrid.

There has been rumor going around that TaylorMade would be creating a successor in its driving-iron (or utility-iron) lineup. This isn't the final product, since this is a testing round, but the feedback the players give this week will help the TaylorMade iron team, headed by Tomo Bystedt, make final tweaks before making this gorgeous iron available.
