Which golf clubs should a golfer carry in their golf bag?

A golfer is allowed 14 golf clubs in their bag under the Rules of Golf. Rule 4-4, which establishes the 14-club limit, however, doesn't dictate which 14 clubs a golfer needs to have in their bag. So, which 14 clubs should a golfer carry in their bag? We take a look at the ideal bag make up for most golfers.

Which golf clubs should a golfer carry in their golf bag

The two must-have golf clubs for a golfer are a driver and a putter. Of course, it's up to the golfer to have those clubs catered to their needs and specifications, but every common golfer needs a driver and a putter.

How about a fairway wood? Most golfers carry at least a 3-wood. Many golfers choose a second fairway woods, typically a 5-wood or 7-wood, usually to perform shots of a specific length.

Golfers should also carry a set of irons. However, golfers don't have to carry a full set of irons. Most golfers carry at least a 7-iron, 8-iron, 9-iron and pitching wedge.

Going with less-lofted clubs after the 7-iron, some golfers choose to carry hybrids to replace their 6-, 5-, 4- and/or 3-iron. Hybrids are easier to hit from all lies and launch the ball higher. They're ideal for higher-handicap players as well players with slower swing speeds.

Golfers who choose irons above 7-iron typically choose at least a 6-iron and a 5-iron, bringing in one or two hybrids for the 4- or 3-irons. Some golfers still carry 4- and 3-irons. Some, in fact, eschew hybrids in favor of driving irons, like a 2-iron. That would be ideal for a lower-handicap golfer.

Golfers also need wedges in their bag. Typically, golfers carry three wedges, with gapping that fits their games. Common configurations are 52-, 56- and 60-degree wedges, as well 50-, 54- and 58-degree combos. Some longer-hitting golfers choose a fourth wedge to tighten up the gapping for particular shots. Rarely does a golfer carry just two wedges beyond the pitching wedge.

Altogether, a player needs to have 14 clubs -- and no more -- in their golf bag. But the choice is up to the player to find the right mix for their ability, their swing speed and the type of golf courses they play. If a golfer plays the same course over and over, they should set up the bag to that course.
