The PGA Tour will expand its Asian swing with a new event in South Korea that starts in the 2017-18 season.
The CJ Cup at Nine Bridges is the title of the tournament, sponsored by the CJ Corporation, which has a huge footprint in South Korea and has been a big sponsor of golf through the years. It will be played Oct. 19-22, 2017. The event, played at a host course still to be determined, will have a 78-player field with a stunning $9.25 million purse.
A total of 60 PGA Tour players will get into the event on the basis of their FedEx Cup standing. The remaining 18 players in the field will be drawn from a variety of exemptions that will also ensure a number of top Korean-born players will make the no-cut event.
“The addition of the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges to our schedule gives us three strong tournaments in consecutive weeks in Asia, and they will play a significant role in shaping the early part of the FedEx Cup season and the FedEx Cup chase overall,” said PGA Tour deputy commissioner Jay Monahan.
The tournament will be run by the PGA Tour's Championship Management arm.
