Who’s in the 2016 U.S. Open field and how to qualify


Who's in the 2016 U.S. Open field? The field for the year's second major, to be played at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh with this year's dates June 16-19, is determined by either exemptions for players who meet any of 15 different criteria or earn a spot in the field through sectional qualifying.

Players for the U.S. Open get an exemption through these categories:

1. Winners of the U.S. Open Championship the last ten years -- Jordan Spieth, Martin Kaymer, Justin Rose, Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Lucas Glover, Tiger Woods, Angel Cabrera, Geoff Ogilvy

2. Winner and runner-up of the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship (must be an amateur) -- N/A (Bryson DeChambeau turned pro)

3. Winner of the 2015 British Amateur Championship (must be an amateur) -- Romain Langasque

4. Winner of the 2015 Mark H. McCormack Medal (top-ranked in Men’s World Amateur Golf Rankings; must be an amateur) -- Jon Rahm

5. Winners of the Masters Tournament the last five years -- Danny Willett, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Adam Scott

6. Winners of the British Open Championship the last five years -- Zach Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Darren Clarke

7. Winners of the PGA of America Championship the last five years -- Jason Day, Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley

8. Winners of the Players Championship the last three years -- Rickie Fowler

9. Winner of the 2016 European Tour BMW PGA Championship -- TBD

10. Winner of the 2015 U.S. Senior Open Championship -- Jeff Maggert

11. From the 2015 U.S. Open Championship, the 10 lowest scorers and anyone tying for 10th place -- Louis Oosthuizen, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Branden Grace, Charl Schwartzel, Brandt Snedeker, Shane Lowry

12. Players qualifying for the season-ending 2015 Tour Championship -- Danny Lee, Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey, J.B.
