At 66 years old, Tom Watson isn't showing signs that he can't keep up with the young guys.
On Friday, Watson made the cut at the KLM Open in the Netherlands on the number at 3-under 137 and trails leader Soren Kjeldsen by nine shots heading into the weekend at Kennemer Golf and Country Club. A second-round 68 had 16 pars and two birdies, just enough to get Watson to the weekend. The cut number was the lowest on the European Tour this season.
This is Watson's first appearance in the Dutch Open.
"Darren Clarke said to me on Monday morning, ‘Tom, you’re going to love this course,'" Watson said in a pre-tournament interview. From one Ryder Cup captain to another, it was good advice.
Though his feat is impressive, Watson is not the oldest player to make the cut in a European Tour event. Left-hander Bob Charles owns that distinction, making the cut at the 2008 New Zealand Open the age of 71 years, 261 days.
Earlier this year, Watson also made the cut at the RBC Heritage after the Masters in April. He finished T-72.
