Jordan Spieth’s sister makes rare appearance in PGA Championship gallery

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- Jordan Spieth is in position this week to do something rare, something only accomplished twice before in golf history. With a win at the PGA Championship, he'll join Ben Hogan (1953) and Tiger Woods (2000) as a three-time major winner in a single year.

On Thursday at Whistling Straits, Spieth had someone in his gallery who is rarely there: his sister, Ellie.

"I heard her yelling when I was walking over the last barrier before the first tee," Spieth said after shooting 1-under 71. "So I went down and saw my parents and Ellie. I didn't hear them much on the course. I think they stayed back a ways."

Ellie Spieth is on the autism spectrum and has special needs, so it's infrequent that she comes to golf tournaments to follow her brother.

"It's awesome when she comes out to events," Jordan Spieth said. "I'm interested to see if she made it through the whole round and what she thought."

Spieth said he was curious what his sister thought of the Thursday action, though he suspects she won't have a real reaction until the trophy is handed out on Sunday.

"If I don't win," he said, "I better have something for her or take her shopping."
