British Open to have Monday finish for 1st time since 1988

The British Open will finish on Monday for the first time since 1988.

Brutal winds, sustained at 40 mph, on Saturday first forced the suspension of a resumed second round. Then after hours of delays, the R&A announced that it will only plan on completing the second round on Saturday. The plan is to complete the third round on Sunday and the final round on Monday.

The only prior Monday finish in Open Championship history came at Royal Lytham and St. Annes in 1988. Seve Ballesteros won his third and final Claret Jug with a Monday 65 to finish two strokes ahead of 54-hole leader Nick Price.

As for Saturday play, the R&A has indicated play will not resume before 3 p.m. local time or 10 a.m. Eastern.
