Phil Mickelson calls his 2013 Open Championship win his most satisfying, primarily because just about no one ever saw him winning the Claret Jug. It's the major that has given him the most trouble and the one that required him to evolve as a player to win.
So, with the Scottish Open at Gullane this week and '13 Open site Muirfield within short driving distance, Mickelson decided to take some time to remember what he accomplished two years ago. He took his wife Amy, manager Steve Loy and caddie Jim Mackay, as well a bottle of wine, to Muirfield to walk around and reminisce.
"I didn’t take a club. Just a bottle of wine though we could have done with another bottle. There were the three people who are the most important people in my life, apart from my kids," Mickelson said, according to Reuters.
"We spent an hour and a half on a golf course where there wasn’t a soul there and remembering what took place there. It was probably the most special victory of my career and to be able to relive it with those three people was really special. The members could not have been more gracious as no one annoyed us and they left us alone, so we had a wonderful night and it even rained, which was even better."
Mickelson, who hasn't won a PGA Tour event since his fifth major triumph in Scotland, believes his game is in good shape heading to St. Andrews for this year's Open, saying, "Over the next three days what I will focus on is more on fine tuning rather than finding something."
