Sergio Garcia hires Juan Carlos Ferrero as Thailand Open caddie

Sergio Garcia will have a different face on the bag in his defense of the Thailand Open than the looper who helped him to victory in 2013.

Garcia has hired friend and former tennis player Juan Carlos Ferrero as his caddie for the Dec. 11-14 event.

"I've played golf with him many times but he never caddied for me before," said Garcia at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai on Tuesday. "We just talked about it and he mentioned about it and we decided to do it. He is excited about it."

Ferrero, who retired from tennis in 2012, won the 2003 French Open.

A year ago, Garcia's fiancee Katharina Boehm was on the bag. Then days after the victory, Garcia announced Boehm had fired him.

"I wanted to keep going, but she fired me," Garcia joked. "It was something she wanted to do since we started dating, and I thought that would be a good week, being the end of the year and maybe a little bit more relaxed."

There's no hard feelings from the happy Spaniard.

"Katharina is fine," Garcia said. "She is happy to step aside and support from the sidelines. It always helps to have a friend on your bag."
