With Tiger Woods announcing he has split with coach Sean Foley, the rumor mill has fired up that Woods and former instructor Butch Harmon might be getting back together. They're not, and Harmon put that to rest on Monday.
“No I would not and he’s not going to call and ask,” Harmon said to GolfChannel.com. “I don’t think he needs a swing coach. If I were advising Tiger I’d tell him, ‘You’re the greatest player that ever lived, just go to the range and hit shots.’”
A report surfaced at the PGA Championship suggesting there had been preliminary talks between the two about a possible reunion, but that was quickly shot down by Tim Rosaforte of Golf World.
Woods said Monday he hasn't identified a new coach and has no timetable to do so.
Harmon, speaking to GolfChannel.com on Monday, praised Foley.
"In Sean’s defense, I had the easiest job in my 10 years," Harmon said. "He was the healthiest. Sean had the hardest job."
When Woods worked with Harmon, Woods won eight major titles. The pair split up at the 2003 Open Championship, with Woods moving on to work with Hank Haney, under whose eye he won another six majors.
It's not as though Harmon could have simply cleared his schedule to work with Woods again, however. Harmon is working with Phil Mickelson, among other top players, and is credited with making Rickie Fowler into a top-five machine in the major championships in 2014.
