Since breaking up with his fiance, Rory McIlroy had to fill up all that time he had been spending with Caroline Wozniacki. He decided to focus on his work, meaning he focused on his golf game.
The result? An Open Championship breakthrough and the 36-hole lead at the PGA Championship.
"I think what happened has been for the better in terms of my golf," McIlroy said after posting a two-round total of 9 under par at Valhalla G.C. "I’ve put a bit more time into it and it has refocused me. I mean, what else do I have to do now? I go to the golf course, I go to the gym and it’s just my life at the minute."
The approach is clearly working, as McIlroy is displaying the kind of confidence that cannot be ignored. Ted Scott, caddie for Bubba Watson, spent the last two days walking alongside the Ulsterman as was impressed.
I caddied in the last group in the 2000 Canadian open w @TigerWoods. I haven't seen anyone that confident until this week. Wow #rorymcilroy

McIlroy admits work begats success which begats more hard work.
"I worked pretty hard before but the past couple of months," he continued. "I’ve really just buried myself in my game. It obviously works pretty well, so I am going to keep doing it."
