Tiger Woods’ back injury helped by PGA Tour bye week

The bye week in the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs could not have come at a much better time for Tiger Woods.

Woods, who injured his back ahead of The Barclays while sleeping on a soft hotel bed three weeks ago, got a one-week break from the playoffs ahead of this week's third leg outside of Chicago at the BMW Championship.

“That was nice,” Woods said Wednesday at Conway Farms, host to the tournament. “It was nice to have that week of treatment, strengthening, so that was all good. I was back to practicing toward the end of (last) week.”

The world No. 1 enters the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at second place in the standings, behind Henrik Stenson. Stenson won the Deutsche Bank Championship near Boston, where Woods never got rolling and finished T-65 for his worst-ever finish in the event.

If Woods can end this week inside the top five, he can win the FedEx Cup with a victory in the playoff finale next week at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Tiger Woods is the only player to have won the FedEx Cup twice, doing so its first year in 2007 and again in 2009. The second time around, Woods didn't win the Tour Championship, finishing behind Phil Mickelson at East Lake but still with enough points to win the $10 million prize.
