What does the Samsung Galaxy Gear mean for golfers?

The smartwatch revolution is beginning. Several technology companies are releasing smartwatches in the coming months, but the most talked-about is the Samsung Gear.

The Samsung Gear smartwatch comes out in October, with a price tag of $299. It has a 2.5-inch screen, a camera on the watch strap and speakers on the clasp. The Samsung Gear will respond to touch and swipe gestures, like any touchscreen device. It syncs up with a mobile phone using Bluetooth technology, though it will hit the market with some 70 apps already designed specifically for it.

So will some of those watch-specific apps, likely to be offered strictly through a Samsung app store, help golfers?

At this point, that's unclear.

However, there is a smartwatch already on the market that includes a GPS for golfers. Motorola's MotoACTV watch came out last year, primarily aimed at products like Nike's Fuelband. However, the MotoACTV has a GPS function included for golfers, with over 10,000 courses already built into the device memory. The GPS will not only give distances to the hole while you play, but also allow you to track your score.

Turns out, the MotoACTV is also a bit of a precursor to the Galaxy Gear. Syncing with a phone over Bluetooth, like the Galaxy Gear, the MotoACTV delivers notifications for incoming text messages, email and social networks.
