President Donald Trump interrupted his own speech during a state dinner honoring Great Britain's King Charles III to praise Rory McIlroy's 2026 Masters win.
McIlroy was in attendance at the dinner in Washington, D.C., as Trump segued off-topic, triggered by the phrase "unconquerable courage."
"This unconquerable courage. It really is unconquerable," Trump said, before looking up from the remarks to find the back-to-back Masters champion. "And speaking of unconquerable, where's Rory McIlroy? Stand up, Rory, will you?"
McIlroy stood as Trump continued, "That was unconquerable courage. That was very good, Rory."
The assembled guests applauded the fourth man to ever win consecutive Masters titles.
"I don't know if that helps them talk about how wonderful this speech, but I had to interrupt my speech because I watched that man win a tournament that was tough. That was a tough one. Congratulations. Very proud of you. Alright, now I'll get back to my speech, Rory."
The crowd laughed at the President's self-interjection.
Interestingly enough, McIlroy is not playing this week's PGA Tour event at Trump National Doral Resort's Blue Monster Course in Doral, Florida. He attended this, and he'll play next week's Signature event -- with a $20 million purse, the same as this week's debuting event -- in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the Truist Championship.
McIlroy has won at host Quail Hollow several times, and he also skipped the post-Masters Signature event, the RBC Heritage in South Carolina, in seeking to optimize his schedule ahead of the next major championship, which is the PGA Championship in two weeks at Aronimink Golf Club outside of Philadelphia.
