The AIG Women’s Open will be played at Sunningdale in England in 2028, moving back around two weeks from its normal cadence to Aug. 17-20 to accommodate the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The announcement marks the return of the AIG Women's Open, which will be played for a $10 million purse in 2026, to the club's Old Course for the first time in 2008.
Sunningdale has been a steady home to the AIG Women's Open over the years, with the last four Sunningdale champions being Karrie Webb (1997), Se Ri Pak (2001), Karen Stupples (2004) and Jiyai Shin (2008).
“Sunningdale continues a run of world class venues for the AIG Women’s Open," said Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of the R&A. "Venue selection is incredibly important to The R&A and AIG as we remain committed to making the AIG Women’s Open one of the world’s leading women’s sports events.
“With a track record of producing outstanding champions, Sunningdale will provide a fantastic test of golf and we look forward to an exciting AIG Women’s Open in 2028.”
Sunningdale is where Karen Stupples began her final round with an eagle and an albatross to start 5 under par through two holes, carding a 64 on Sunday to win and shoot the lowest-ever final round by an AIG Women's Open champion.
“We are very pleased to have been chosen to host the AIG Women’s Open in 2028," said Paul Chase-Gardener, Chairman of Sunningdale. "It is a great honour for the Club and a reflection of the standing of our courses within the game. Sunningdale has a long and valued association with championship golf, having previously hosted this Championship on four occasions.
In addition to hosting the AIG Women’s Open four times, Sunningdale hosted four ISPS Handa Senior Open Championships, the 1997 Walker Cup and the 2024 Curtis Cup.
