In 2028, something will happen with the British Open Championship -- golf's oldest championship -- that's never been seen in the more than 150-year history of the event.
It will be played entirely in August.
The R&A has announced the dates for their championship slate, including The Open, the AIG Women's Open and the ISPS Handa Senior Open, for 2028. All three events, including the final men's major of the year is going to move that year from July to August to accommodate the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In those Olympics, the reconfigured golf events will be played at Riviera Country Club, home to the 2026 US Women's Open and the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational.
The 156th Open will be played Aug. 3-6, with the ISPS Handa Senior Open played a week later and the AIG Women's Open rounding out the series from Aug. 17-20.
The Open was played on Aug. 31 - Sept. 1 in 1893 at Prestwick, back when it was a two-day affair. That's the only time in the history of the event that it has been played at all in August (or September). The Open has never been played in January, February, March or December. It's been played three times in April, May and November, eight times in October, 18 times in September (fully), 32 times in June, twice between June and July and 84 times in July.
“We have worked collaboratively with the relevant bodies and our partners to agree alternative dates for staging our major championships in 2028 to accommodate the Olympic golf competitions," said Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of the R&A.
“We appreciate the constructive discussions we have had with all of the stakeholders and believe that providing clarity on the dates now will assist with the planning of the global golf calendar in 2028. We can also confirm that The Open will be returning to its normal mid-July dates in 2029.”
The future venues the British Open Championship, AIG Women's Open and ISPS Handa Senior Open have yet to be confirmed
