Xander Schauffele withdrew from this week's 2025 The American Express on Monday, changing the field for this week's PGA Tour event at PGA West and La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, Calif.
Schauffele was committed to the field at the tournament deadline, but he pulled out of the event on Monday without giving a reason.
Now Schauffele will not participate in the event in the California desert, meaning Wyndham Clark is now the highest-ranked player in the field.
There are now 18 top-50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking in the field. Patrick Cantlay, Sungjae Im and Nick Dunlap will be big draws, with Dunlap defending the title he won last year as an amateur.
Schauffele has not given a reason for the withdrawal. Whatever the reason, Schauffele's absence is a negative for the first mainland United States tournament on the PGA Tour schedule.
Schauffele is replaced in the tournament field by Philip Knowles. As the pre-tournament betting favorite, Schauffele exiting the tournament will dramatically shift the pre-tournament betting odds.
Justin Thomas is now the betting favorite, while Patrick Cantlay is 15-to-1 to win.
