Tony Finau denies LIV Golf rumors, says he withdrew from Hero World Challenge after surgery

Tony Finau says he isn't going to LIV Golf in 2025, despite what the heavily churning rumor mill is suggesting.

Finau spoke with Golfweek ahead of the 2024 Hero World Challenge, from which Finau withdrew heading into the week. Finau's withdrawal -- combined with having not yet committed to the PGA Tour's 2025 opener, The Sentry, in Hawaii -- spurred on rumors that he was heading to LIV Golf next year.

Finau, though, said the rumors are "not true" and said reports from various online sources were baseless and "not credible."

“I’m more than happy where I’m at on the PGA Tour and looking forward to 2025. When I tee it up in Maui, it will all go away, so, I don’t worry about it one bit," said Finau.

The Utah native said the reason he withdrew from this week's Tiger Woods-hosted tournament in the Bahamas is because he had knee surgery on October 15 and wasn't fully ready to compete in the 20-player PGA Tour challenge event. The surgery was to repair a torn meniscus and remove floating cartilage in his left knee.

Finau told Woods about the need to withdraw, and Finau said Woods agreed that was the right decision given his recovery and timeline.

The world No. 26 has been the subject of LIV Golf rumors each of the last two years, and several online sources friendly to LIV Golf suggested his departure was, more or less, imminent. That didn't wind up being the case.

Speculation increased after the LIV Golf season, when Kieran Vincent was relegated from the league and removed from Jon Rahm's Legion XIII team. Rahm and Finau are good friends, and Rahm was highly complimentary of Finau in an interview in September with the Mirror in the UK.

"If you don't get along with Tony Finau, there is something wrong with you," Rahm said to the Mirror. "If he's not the nicest, he's tied for the nicest person I know."

"Top one for sure and he's just a fun guy - nice to be around. When it comes to golf, we're both extremely competitive. We have a great friendship, we clicked right away but that competitiveness drives both of us to play better. And obviously, unless I'm playing with him on the golf course, I want to see him win."
