The 2019 Invesco QQQ Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Colin Montgomerie, who picked up a big win in the second of three Charles Schwab Cup playoff events at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer finished 54 holes of regulation at 14-under 202, going to a sudden-death playoff to decide the champion. Both players found the fairway with their tee shots, but Langer's approach shot found a nearly impossible lie in a greenside bunker. Montgomerie found the green.

Langer then took four shots to get out of the bunker, including effectively hitting the same shot into a steep slope from the back lip three times. Langer took 6 on the hole, with Montgomerie being conceded a winning par after his birdie putt was left inside 2 feet.

Montgomerie won the $305,000 winner's share of the $2,000,000 purse.

Invesco QQQ Championship recap notes

The Rules of Golf say a playoff in a stroke-play event cannot be determined by match play. That made the conceded par from Langer particularly confusing, as Montgomerie never holed the par putt to win the tournament. It's unclear why this was allowed.

Both Langer and Montgomerie are still in the running for the Charles Schwab Cup as a result of the playoff. Montgomerie picked up 610,000 Charles Schwab Cup playoff points with the win, which is double the money he won.

The top 36 players in the standings move on to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship next week in Arizona. All 36 of those players are assured exempt status on the PGA Tour Champions next season.

The top five players earn a piece of the Charles Schwab Cup bonus pool, which is $2.1 million. The winner gets a $1 million annuity, consistent with the business model of Charles Schwab.

The last man in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship is Doug Barron, who, earlier this season, won as a Monday qualifier.
