Since 2016, NBC and Golf Channel have been airing the British Open Championship, taking over from ESPN and ABC after decades. They came back to a theme that sounded familiar, like something they've heard in the past. And they're right; it's a great, old theme. But what is it?
The British Open Championship theme song on NBC and Golf Channel is a variation of "In Celebration of Man," which was composed by Yanni. NBC used it for many years when it had the rights to USGA championships, airing it as the theme song to the US Open, US Women's Open, US Senior Open, US Amateur and other events.
When NBC and Golf Channel got the British Open to effectively replace the US Open as the major championship to which they have rights, they chose to bring back the Yanni song and pump in some bagpipes and other Scottish sounds to make it feel like a song about links golf.
You can hear the differences between the USGA version and the British Open version:
NBC calls it the "Scottish Flair" version of the song, but it'll always be "In Celebration of Man." A Yanni all-timer.
