Tiger Woods has been spotted using a new driving iron at the 2018 British Open Championship, and several other TaylorMade players have also been seen sporting the new GAPR Lo driving-iron replacement.
Now, TaylorMade has unveiled the GAPR series of clubs, with a Lo, Mid and Hi set of models to help bridge the gap from a golfer’s longest iron in their bag to their shortest wood. This has typically been the space occupied by hybrids, but more golfers are increasingly looking for the look of an iron with the technology of a hybrid and/or irons in the player’s distance category. That’s the thinking behind having three distinct choices in the GAPR series:
- The GAPR Lo is the most iron-like of the three, with the thinnest sole
- The GARP Mid is a hybrid with iron traits, as it’s more compact in shape and designed for players who don’t want to feel like they’re holding a mini-wood in their hands
- The GAPR Hi looks more like a modern hybrid, with a classic Rescue shape you’d come to expect from TaylorMade
All three clubs make handy use of SpeedFoam, which was introduced in the P790 irons. SpeedFoam is designed to deliver improved ball speeds through energy transfer in hollow-body designs, while also delivering improved feel and acoustics at impact. The center of gravity is driven low on these models for a higher launch and a hotter release.
The GAPR Lo has a more forward center of gravity for higher ball speeds and better players, looking to keep the ball with a more boring ball flight. The GAPR Mid has a lower CG, and it’s designed to look less like a modern hybrid while still inspiring confidence in most any player. The GAPR Hi is for the widest swath of players, offering the lowest-and-backest CG of the three for highest trajectory.
The TaylorMade GAPR series is available Aug. 24 for $250 each, with the GAPR Lo in 17-, 19- and 22-degree options, the GAPR Mid in 18-, 21- and 24-degree options and the GAPR Hi in 19-, 22-, 25- and 28-degree heads. All come with a KBS hybrid shaft in a full suite of flexes.
