The biggest purses in professional golf come in major tournaments or events just shy of major status, all carrying big first-place prize money and the largest payouts in the sport.
The U.S. Open has the biggest purse in golf as of 2017, with the United States Golf Association increasing the purse to $12 million, with the winner getting a record $2.16 million.
The Masters Tournament has the second-largest purse in golf, increasing its purse in 2017 from $10 million to $11 million, with $1.98 million going to the green jacket winner.
The PGA Championship and The Players Championship increased their purses simultaneously to $10 million, but the PGA Championship purse is now $10.5 million. The Players, however, has a $11 million purse in 2018, making it the richest non-major tournament.
The British Open purse was 6.5 million British pounds in 2016, which is subject to fluctuation in terms of exchange rates. With the Brexit vote depressing the value of the pound against the U.S. dollar, the purse dropped dramatically almost overnight. The R&A could consider setting the purse in dollars to solidify its prize pool against the other majors.
