The CareerBuilder Challenge is played out over the four-day event on three courses, in a rotation that has changed a number of times over the 50-plus-year history of the event. Since 2016, the rotation has been the Nicklaus Tournament and TPC Stadium courses at PGA West, as well La Quinta Country Club in Palm Springs, Calif.
During each of the first three rounds of the event, the field of professionals goes off in twosomes with an amateur each for the pro-am portion of the event, making each tee time a foursome on each of the three courses. Each day, the professionals and the amateurs see a new course until the third round is completed, and that's when a cut is made to the top 70 pros and ties for the final round on Sunday.
Here's the rotation for each professional over the first three days, depending on where they start the tournament:
- Round 1: La Quinta Country Club; Round 2: PGA West (Nicklaus Tournament); Round 3: PGA West (TPC Stadium)...OR
- Round 1: PGA West (TPC Stadium); Round 2: La Quinta Country Club; Round 3: PGA West (Nicklaus Tournament)...OR
- Round 1: PGA West (Nicklaus Tournament); Round 2: PGA West (TPC Stadium); Round 3: La Quinta Country Club
If 78 or more pros make the 54-hole cut, then the Sunday field is reduced to the number nearest 60, with the players who made the cut but don't play the final round earning paychecks and FedEx Cup points but no chance to improve in the final round at PGA West's TPC Stadium Course.
