Why Jordan Spieth is switching back to his Titleist 714 AP2 irons

Jordan Spieth is going back to the irons that won him the first two majors of 2015, which probably makes you wonder why he switched in the first place.

Well, Titleist had provided Spieth with a prototype set that matched the specs of his 714 AP2s, and Spieth used Titleist's new 716 AP2 irons at The Barclays last week. Spieth missed the cut at Plainfield Country Club and also lost the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking to Rory McIlroy.

Spieth said Thursday at the Deutsche Bank Championship that he's going back to the 714 AP2 irons this week, which he used to win the Masters and U.S. Open and that he made the switch too early.

“I have never had trouble transitioning between my (Titleist) AP2 irons,” Spieth said. “I did not see any issues or differences, so I figured there wouldn’t be any problem. And then, I just felt that they were sliding through the turf a little differently and the look was a bit of an adjustment. They look slightly different."

Michael Greller, Spieth's caddie, reached out to his man's teacher, Cameron McCormick, asking him to bring the old sticks from Spieth's hometown of Dallas up to the Boston area for the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

"I still think [the 716 AP2s] are going to be a better iron, they’re improved, but most of what I did was hit off mats with Cameron," Spieth added. "I did some practice on grass during the off-week, and of course I practiced at The Barclays prior to playing. I didn’t see many issues on the driving range, but once I got to some uneven lies and whatnot, I could certainly tell the difference."

However, Spieth didn't blame the irons for his 74-73--MC in New Jersey.

“At the end of the round you are not going to sit there and blame the irons, you’re going to blame yourself, as I should,” he said. “I didn’t think it was the irons, I was planning on just digging through it and reassessing after I got home from this week, but (McCormick) brought them up and I hit both of them on the range and decided that I wanted to go back to what is comfortable.”

The 714 AP2s are good to go for this week, with Spieth committing to making the switch to the 716 line after the Presidents Cup in Korea in October.
