Pro-am galleries typically aren't very large, but this is the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The party has already started. That means the par-3 16th at TPC Scottsdale was jam-packed with fans, all excited to see Tiger Woods roll through.
Woods' tee shot to the 16th landed in the bunker just left of the green. For a pro, the splash shot was pretty routine. However, Woods wound up catching the ball first with his bunker effort, and the ball sailed into the grandstands to the right of the green. The 14-time major champion smiled after the shot -- maybe somewhat surprised, maybe trying to play it off as intentional.
However, Woods didn't seem happy when he chunked a chip shot at the 18th hole.
The short game was the sore spot in Woods' return to competitive golf at the Hero World Challenge back in December, with Woods saying Tuesday he hit "thousands of chips" in an effort to settle on a technique. It may still be a work in progress.
