Masters Week has come and gone, and the regular PGA Tour season resumes this week down in Hilton Head for the RBC Heritage held at the Pete Dye-designed Harbour Town Golf Links. While Dustin Johnson is the only truly elite player in the field, there is a very solid level of above average playing this week, giving the Heritage a field that is deep with plenty of guys who can contend.

Accuracy is the name of the game this week as Harbour Town is one of the tightest tracks on the PGA Tour. The fairways are both narrow and tree-lined, which forces many players into taking less than driver off the tee to stay out of the trouble that they’ll see should they miss the fairway. This leads to Harbour Town averaging by far the lowest average driving distance on the entire PGA Tour schedule. It’s no wonder than short but accurate knockers like Luke Donald, Brian Gay, Matt Kuchar and Kevin Kisner have great track records at this event.

With players opting to club down off the tee, inevitably they’ll be left with longer approach shots and Harbour Town tends to play fairly long at 7,100 yards with the majority of approach shots falling above 175 yards. I’ll be looking to target players who are excellent with their long irons, such as Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson and Jim Furyk. Harbour Town also features some of the smallest greens that we’ll see all season, so every player will have their short game’s tested throughout the week, and even more so if the wind decides to blow.

In terms of roster construction, Dustin Johnson is clearly the class of the field but due to Harbour Town’s tight layout bringing the short hitters into play, I think it makes sense to fade DJ and pray he doesn’t blitz the field by 8 shots, which is entirely possible too.  If you do want to lean on DJ to anchor your lineups, there are a ton of players in the $7,500 and below range that have top-10 or even win equity to make you feel good about going that route as well. I’m really going to be looking at players who have a proven record of success on Pete Dye layouts. Looking at recent results at events such as The Players, RSM Classic, Zurich Classic and Colonial CC could help you find so guys who also fit the layout here at Harbour Town.
