Paint maker Valspar becomes title sponsor of Tampa PGA Tour stop

Putting a fresh coat on its stop in Tampa, the PGA Tour announced paint maker Valspar will become the new title sponsor of the annual March event played at Innisbrook Resort.

Valspar has agreed to a four-year deal to take over the open title-sponsor spot, which was vacated by eyewear maker Transitions after the 2012 tournament. Last year, the event was played as the Tampa Bay Championship with Everbank serving as presenting sponsor. Bank BB&T will replace Everbank in that role in this new deal.

The Minnesota-based paint company will also become the PGA Tour's official paint supplier.

Organizers of the Puerto Rico Open, which has been played as an alternate-field event opposite the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral in March, was hoping to step into the Tampa slot if the tournament and the Tour were unable to identify a new title sponsor.

The 2014 Valspar Championship will be played March 13-16, continuing on at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort.
