After a nearly yearlong renovation, Sea Island’s Plantation Course has reopened. Davis Love III and his Love Golf Design firm, which has effectively been the in-house design firm for the Georgia island resort, completed the project, with DL3’s brother Mark working with the two-time U.S. Ryder Cup captain. The brothers drew from the Plantation Course’s rich 90-year history as a guide, bringing in classic design elements of the era and natural, historical landscaping elements. All of this was intertwined with much of Walter Travis’ original 1928 design of the opening nine holes.
The Plantation Course and the Seaside Course jointly host the PGA Tour’s The RSM Classic, which will be played Nov. 21-24 at Sea Island Golf Club as the final Tour event of the calendar year.
The renovation is part of a $30 million investment in the Sea Island community to improve the golf facilities. There’s a new 17,000-square-foot Golf Performance Center, six new cottages, an 18-hole putting course, expanded practice facilities and a new pool and pool house. Coming soon is the King Cottage, which has four bedrooms and private hitting bays.
