TaylorMade Golf introduces P790 UDI utility iron

TaylorMade Golf makes one of the best driving irons in golf, and their work with the UDI (Ultimate Driving Iron) over the years has recently led to a bit of an uptick in the number of companies offering some form of utility long irons alongside their hybrids.

Now TaylorMade is bringing the UDI concept to their popular P790 players-distance irons, which have been creating eye-popping numbers for golfers in tests.

The P790 UDI uses the same SpeedFoam technology found in the P790 irons, packaged in a soft, 8620 carbon steel body which combines with high-strength forged 4140 carbon steel with a wrapped-face construction in a hollow-body design. The SpeedFoam material is inside the hollow construction and helps improve ball speeds with face support, and it also improves sound and feel for a more discerning player.

This UDI has a smaller Inverted Cone than prior UDI models to cover a smaller portion of the face. This smaller Inverted Cone allows for less face-thickness at the perimeter to increase full-face flexibility for higher ball speeds. Internal metal-injection-molded (MIM) tungsten is used to precisely place center of gravity and improve moment of inertia (MOI).

The TaylorMade P790 UDI is available March 30 for $220 in a 17-degree 2-iron with the Project X Hzrdus Yellow (85 grams) shaft for a low launch and low spin profile.
