Jordan Spieth grew up in Texas -- as you've probably heard -- and there's pretty much never a calm day in the Lone Star state. The wind is always moving there. So, the three-time major winner grew up playing in those conditions, and he finds it downright odd when he's playing golf and there's not a stir in the air. That's why you'll never see Spieth play in the California desert for the CareerBuilder Challenge or the Phoenix Open or any other event where conditions are as close to perfect as possible.
“I have, and will continue to schedule tournaments away from a dome, because it's just unusual for me. I like having the feel aspect,” said Spieth on Thursday. “Places with no wind, where it's just driving range shots, it's just never been something I've been used to. So I don't really know what to do on them.”
Spieth played at TPC Scottsdale and found the sunny, wind-less conditions to work against him and his style of play.
“I played in a dome in Phoenix, and I didn't strike the ball well there. Actually I've had quite a few this year, where we didn't have very windy conditions,” Spieth said. “I don't go to Palm Springs, never have, because of that. Look at where you can take weeks off and if they match up with places that potentially aren't the best for me, then it works out.”
Basically, Spieth wants to play where the wind swirls. He wants to play in more difficult conditions because it favors his game and his mentality.
