WGC-Mexico Championship could be missing Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth

The second WGC-Mexico Championship isn't going to have quite the same star power as the maiden 2017 edition. That's because Jason Day and Rory McIlroy have already said they're skipping the first World Golf Championships events of 2018, and Jordan Spieth may follow them.

When Rory McIlroy announced his early 2018 schedule, the WGC-Mexico Championship was missing. At first, it seemed like perhaps an oversight, but it's now clear McIlroy isn't play at Club de Golf Chapultepec.

McIlroy hasn't really spoken about his decision not to play the no-cut event, set to be played March 1-4 in Mexico City.

Jason Day won't be there either, as he is planning on spending that time with his mom as she undergoes tests related to her treatment of lung cancer.

"I'm going to take Mexico off," Day said to the Australian Associated Press. "My mum is coming over here (to the U.S.) to have scans, so I'm going to spend some time with her."

Jordan Spieth is up in the air about the tournament as well, saying at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am that he hasn't yet made up his mind about the event.

"I really have no idea what I'm going to do after next week (Genesis Open). I know that at least Honda will be off," Spieth told reporters. "I'm going to have to kind of see how I'm feeling, how I've been recovering in the week off, and then what is the best prep to be ready by the time we tee it up at Augusta."

Dustin Johnson is defending champion.

The WGC-Mexico Championship placed the WGC-Cadillac Championship, which had been played at Trump National Doral Resort in Florida. Moving the event from Doral ended a 60-year continuous history with the PGA Tour.
