Bill Haas injured in fatal Los Angeles-area car accident: Report

Six-time PGA Tour winner Bill Haas was injured and transported to a local medical facility after he was a passenger in a fatal two-car collision on Tuesday in Pacific Palisades, Calif., site of this week's Genesis Open.

KTLA reports Haas was one of two passengers in a Ferrari and taken to the hospital as a result of the incident involving the Ferrari and a BMW, which happened around 6:30 p.m. Pacific time.

The 71-year-old driver of the Ferrari, who was friends with Haas and his family, died at the scene. Haas, per the TV station, suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital, according to Golf Channel. Haas has withdrawn from the tournament.

The PGA Tour and Haas' manager, Allen Hobbs of Players Group Management, released a statement saying Haas is heading home to Greenville, S.C., to recover.

"While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and – more importantly – his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time," the statement said in part.

Another passenger, identified as a 50-year-old woman, is expected to be OK as well. At this time, it's unclear in which vehicle she was during the accident.

A third vehicle, an SUV apparently owned by actor Luke Wilson, was sideswiped by the Ferrari in traffic before the accident. Wilson was not injured.

The incident remains under investigation.
