As President Donald Trump retreated from public view on Friday and Saturday at his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., neo-Nazis, white nationalists and other so-called alt-right (read: catch-all term for irrationally hating various groups of people) were marching in Charlottesville, Va., with tiki torches and chanting racist and fascist slogans in an effort, apparently, to keep a statue of confederate general Robert E. Lee in a local park which had been renamed.
When several people died on Saturday, Trump failed to unequivocally condemn these groups, parsing his language so as not to lose the support of the niche hardcore xenophobe demographic.
As the country awoke to shock, disgust and anger over the protests from the night prior, one image stood out. It was of a marcher carrying a torch and wearing the exact same outfit Donald Trump often wears when he plays golf: white golf shirt, khack slacks, a belt and a red Make America Great Again hat. The visual couldn't have been by chance, as many on social media picked up on the parallel between what racists were wearing in Charlottesville and what Trump wears every time he plays golf.
