A new world record for the longest drive ever hit by a female golfer was set on July 25 in Colorado when World Long Drive went into the Rockies for the Mile High Showdown.
Airing on Golf Channel, there were two competitions, with men and women in separate divisions smashing drives in the thin air at elevation of the Denver area. With the ball traveling 10-15 percent farther at elevation, there were going to be some massive drives by the competitors. But did anyone expect a 406-yard drive by Phillis Meti? Well, no.
Meti was competing in the semifinal round of the women's division at Park Hill Golf Club against Sandra Carlborg, and she hit a drive which carried about 340 yards. When that drive hit the ground, however, it hit something -- maybe a sprinkler head? -- very hard and it shot forward. The ball rolled out another some 65 yards, remaining in the 60-yard wide grid and counting as the winning drive in her match against Carlborg.

Meti lost to Troy Mullins in the final (374-363) but she set a World Long Drive record in the process.
