William McGirt is not a name familiar to a lot of casual golf fans, but they should get to know the man whose name is now atop the leaderboard in the first round of the 2017 Masters.
McGirt got into the Masters by virtue of winning the 2016 Memorial Tournament, played on Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, for his first PGA Tour win. The win earned McGirt a three-year PGA Tour exemption on top of the berth in the Masters.
So far in 2017, McGirt has two top-10 finishes, both T-9s, in fact: one at the SBS Tournament of Champions in January and another in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in March. He has missed three cuts in 11 starts this season.
In total, McGirt has been on the PGA Tour full-time since 2011, the year after McGirt got through PGA Tour Q-School to earn his card.
As for William McGirt's personal bio, he's a 37-year-old from Lumberton, N.C., and he's been married since 2004 to his wife, Sarah.
While being in the Masters is a big deal for McGirt, he says in his official PGA Tour profile that his biggest thrill playing golf is once making two holes-in-one in the same round.
